The Church and theology are the topic that will get you off of the couch, and onto the platform in front of the Church. The Church and theology can seem like a field where no one ever wins. It’s not a matter of winning or losing, it’s a matter of taking on new challenges that bring along with them many challenges of their own. The Church and theology are not a field that goes away.
It seems that the very first people to get in touch with the theological aspects of Church and theology were not priests.
No, they were simply ordinary men and women who felt that they were not speaking the language of God. They did not know what the word theology meant to their fellow men.
What would happen if theologically educated people gathered in prayer and learned the language of the Lord? And what would happen when the theological questions they ask came back with answers that changed their lives? I believe that it is what would happen.
Theologians had been asked to ponder these theological questions. Surely this type of prayer was not too new. If people could not ask questions to God in the name of Jesus Christ, there was no hope for the Faithful.
Theology cannot be a part of everyday life. It needs to be kept very private. One cannot expect to find God by praying in everyday life. One has to search, and find the treasures of God in prayer.
The meaning of everyday life is not something you can find in the Bible. You cannot have any doubt about that. The regularities of life are out of reach to many of us. It is only because we accept what we can find in the Bible, and the realities of our daily life that we ever manage to be in relationship with God. The Church and theology do not do that.
What happens in the way people pray?
How many times do we really hear God speaking in everyday life? If people really knew the language of God, they could probably not spend the whole day in prayer. If they did, they would be broke, because they would be praying with all their heart.
How do we learn to pray the way people really want to be prayed to? It has to come from someone else, and it has to come from a Bible. We need to be willing to be taught what we cannot find in the daily vernacular of life.
Our language of prayer comes from God. When we are willing to receive the Word of God as the language of life, we are praying with all our heart. When we really get into the language of God, we need to hear the sound of a Bible. We need to be able to pray with our eyes, and our hands, and our lips, and our heart.
The very truth of the faith and of the Church is found in the fact that we can take the Bible as our tongue, and as our interpreter. We need to know the words of life, and to love the world in the truth of the word. We need to be able to worship God in the very language of the word.
Theology is not an area that you can keep hidden. It is not a field that you can keep in the dark. It is a field that you must go into and see all its challenges, and the fruits that it will bring.
- When the Church and theology are treated as a parallel language, there is a huge opportunity to see the fruit of the vine.
- As soon as the tongue is able to find its way to the Holy Spirit, the fruitfulness of theology will be seen more clearly.
- As people are led into the language of God, the fruitfulness of the Church will be seen more clearly.
- The fruits of theology will be seen in the midst of an emerging Kingdom of God.
